Tangled and our vocation

It's been months since i've last seen a movie. Tangled seems to have combined disney's traditional animated musical theater and dreamworks' quality of computer animation. The 'Mother knows best' song even has some shades of Les Miserables. Great movie!! I'll rank it on the level of Kungfu Panda and 'Train d Dragon'! Tangled has all the ingredients weaved into disney's traditional  musical animated fairy-tale movies. Alan Menken who is part of the many past Disney 2D musical fairy-tales  even came back and composed the songs for Tangled!
Be informed that this note contains spoiler. So if you are still interested to see the movie (for those who didn't see the movie in theaters and just waited for the Dvd) , I will suggest that you watch Tangled first before  reading the rest of this note.

Rapunzel was kidnapped by Gothel because Rapunzel's hair has a magical powers that makes Gothel younger and heal people. The limitation of Rapunzel's hair power is once its cut off, the effects on the people healed by the hair is lessened or reversed. And so to protect Rapunzel's hair since cutting it means that Gothel will show her true age, Gothel kept Rapunzel, they lived inside a tree and she made the girl believe that it is too dangerous for her to go outside the tree. For many years, Rapunzel believed Mother Gothel but as years passed she grew being more and more attracted to the sky lanterns released every year on her birthday.

The lantern  increasingly attracted Rapunzel's attention that she wanted to really know and see where it was coming from. The sky lanterns were being released by the king and the queen hoping that their kidnapped baby will return someday. As the lanterns seem to call her to go where they are coming from, God continues to call us to his love. He is the one who first loves us and invites us to respond back to His love. It is a call that God has embedded in our nature, our natural thirst for Him that He can only satisfy. Just as Rapunzel was attracted to the "call" of the lanterns, a call that reveals who she is, God's call for us reveals what we are made for, our dignity and destiny to be united to Him, and as to where and how we can give Him the greatest glory. This call, the vocation, is where we'll have our inner peace and will give us the best meaning and source of happiness to our life.

Just as Gothel made Rapunzel believe a lie that prevents her from knowing who she is, the evil one tempts us to follow his own destructive and selfish plan. This means that he stops us from knowing that we are made in the image of God, that we are made to be the children of God. For the devil to accomplish this, he makes us forget our relationship with our Father and makes us believe that we can be as gods, having the power to define what is good and evil. A lie that leads us to believe that we alone can give meaning to who we are and the world we live in making ourselves our own god.

Rapunzel, seeing the image of the yellow sun on a cloth, she began to recognize the image of the sun on her own paintings. Unraveling her memories, she was able to recall those images from when she was still a baby. Although we are exiled from paradise, we still have something in us that tells us about God and the  truth about ourselvesb as can be seen by the presence of bits of Christian Truths in most religions around the world. We continue to be in the image of God although that image has been wounded by sin. In her subconscious mind,  Rapunzel drew images of the sun although she didn't realize that the image told her something about her past. This reflects the reality about ourselves.  The truth of what God has willed us to be manifests on every aspects of our lives. Our desires even makes us see that we are made for something that is beyond the material world. We can also relate the cloth that has the image of the sun to the word of God. Although we can recognize universal truths about ourselves and our relationship with other people using the natural capabilities  that we already have, we notice that it can only bring us so far. Although we manifests this truth in the way we act and the way we make sense of things around us, the knowledge about the Father given to us through the supernatural revelation, especially the revelation of Christ, makes us understand better and recognize better these truths. In Christ, the fullness of divine revelation can be known. As what Pope Benedict XVI has said in Caritas in Veritate, Jesus purifies and liberates us in our search for Truth. Jesus himself is the Truth. As Rapunzel was able to recognize the patterns she has been drawing with the help of the image of the sun on a cloth, the image of the Father, Jesus Christ, makes us see the truth about ourselves and thus fully manifest our relationship with God the Father.

Rapunzel discovered more truths about herself when she went outside the tree she's been living in for 18 years. She had continued to live there because she had believed Gothel's lies about the outside world. And since she had a distorted image of the outside world, it became almost impossible for her to know truths about herself.  Our outside world manifests God's beauty, wisdom and intelligence. Through His design of things, we are able to see His mark, an indication of who He is. That is why we are able to understand nature as we know who God really is. Through God's creation, we are able to know God and ourselves.

The Church has taught that Jesus revealed God and he also revealed who man is. Through Him, we are able to see the Father and we are able to better know ourselves. As Father Corapi has said, by looking at the crucified Christ, we are able to know who God is and who man is. By looking at Jesus, we are able to know ourselves.

Is the RH bill constitutional?

Thanks, Fr. Joaquin for giving us an idea of what will happen if the Congress approves the final version of the RH Bill. I am living in the US right now but I try to keep up with the issues surrounding this bill. I pray that our kababayans who oppose it continue to pray, to fight and to continue to exercise the freedom of expression to let the leaders of our land know the dangers of supporting and funding the promotion of contraception and birth control. I thank you for pointing out things in our constitution that will be used as an basis to determine the constitutionality of the bill.

I believe that Section 11 that says, as you have quoted , “The State values the dignity of every human person and guarantees full respect for human rights.” , is violated by the promotion of contraception since, as Pope John Paul II said, contraception takes away the deepest value of the conjugal act by separating the unitive and the procreative aspect of it which means that the the act is precisely proper to human dignity as long as these two aspects are maintained.

The moral teaching of the Church does not contradict nature or science, and as Pope Benedict has said, when it talks to all people of any religion, it proclaims the message using reason and natural law which anyone of us can talk about even without talking of religious belief. Our faith is not divorced to reason as some people think. What is the relation of Faith to Reason? We are able to understand the purpose and design of nature through our ability to reason. But our reason is limited and it is also affected by the wound inflicted to our will due to original sin. So although our reason can understand nature, our reason has to be pointed to the right direction by faith which is the acceptance of the supernatural revelation of Christ. Reason, to serve it's purpose must flow from faith, given direction and meaning by faith and gives the our reason it's goal! Through our faith with the aid of the Church, we are able to understand the natural laws which means that what the Church promotes to be normative in the society are objective truths that all people will be able recognize with their reason and by looking at the grand design of who we are and how we should relate to another person and the society. What the church echoes is a reality about the nature of marriage that transcends any limitations of race, history and beliefs. It applies to all because it explains the natural law. But it doesn't stop there,the Church also echo the supernatural foundations of our nature, realities that aids our reasons and expands our horizons to things that go beyond our reason since human reasoning has it’s limitations.

I know that it is challenging to explain the Church’s teaching to other people especially those who don’t believe in God but understanding our own nature requires our recognition of Him. To understand nature better, one has to see that there are purposes in how nature is designed and how it acts. Most of all, although society has been closing in to itself by not giving space to God, we can only know ourselves by knowing Jesus. It is sad that people think that to oppose the RH bill is largely based on religious beliefs, it is not true since faith doesn’t abolish nature but rather builds on it and elevates it. Through our faith we are guided to find solutions that considers all the aspect of man, social, spiritual, political etc. But we shouldn’t shy away from explaining our side by limiting ourselves to only what reason can reach. We should appeal and reach out to our kababayan’s seed of faith that already has been planted to most Filipinos because of our culture. Natural law tells us that this is how they will have natural marital relations. And this will be the natural way to do it even if they're not capable of having kids. Even if there is a lack of capacity to bear children, it doesn’t mean that we can do things in a different way. The normal way of things jas to be maintained even if one of the ends can't be fulfilled. The act should always be oriented towards having kids. An analogy can be drawn from the fact that some people with mental disorders or retardation are not stopped from walking, from dressing up in a civil way. These things are the the natural ways of doing things and so we help them do these things even if they can't match the level of be as productive as normal people are. The natural design of and law of marital acts is integral part of who we are and to violate this is a disrespect to humanity.

Humanae Vitae states that "Marriage and conjugal love are, by their nature, ordained toward the procreation and education of children. Children are really the supreme gift of marriage and contribute in the highest degree to their parents' welfare." I think that RH bill supporters fail to see and recognize this first because they have lost the sense that creation didn’t happen by chance and that all things are created for a purpose. As a result of their loss of the sense of God and the objective truth, they are predisposed to think that they can do anything that they can think of and they are led to think that there is no moral absolutes. There is a natural reason that is integral to man’s nature as to why the unitive and procreative has to be maintained. It is an expression of love and not just to satisfy our sexual urges . Every person knows that the sexual act should only be done with the mutual consent of partners which makes it different from the sexual act of animals. By nature, we also know that it is open to the gift of life. To separate these two will be detrimental and creates a lot of complications that degrades people, complications that the RH bill refuse to consider which proves that their narrow perspective of who a man is. Paul VI, in Humanae Vitae,foresaw the consequences of methods and plans for artificial birth control in considering the whole aspect of man: 1. marital infidelity and a general lowering of moral standards.2. loss of reverence due to a woman, reducing her to being a mere instrument for the satisfaction of his own desires 3. the danger of this power passing into the hands of those public authorities who care little for the precepts of the moral law. Many people also see that a contraceptive mentality instills an attitude to not to be open to life which makes contraceptive users more inclined to abort their babies. Are these factors irrelevant to man’s dignity that is being protected by Section 11?

"Caritas in Veritate" o Pag-ibig sa loob ng Katotohanan Part I

Sa paggawa ng kalooban ng Diyos natin natatagpuan ang katotohanan.

Ang sinulat na Encyclical na 'Caritas in Veritate' ni Papa Benito XVI,  ay tumatalakay sa mga mahahalagang bagay para sa kaunlaran ng bawat tao at ng kaunlaran ng lipunan. Sinasagot nito ang mga tanong na: Ano ang Pag-ibig, ano ang Katotohanan, ano ang doktrinang panlipunan ng Iglesiya , ano ang kaugnayan ng mga turo na ito sa ating panahon ngayon: kakulangan sa trabaho, pandaigdigang kagutuman, paghihirap at kurapsyon sa pamahalaan

Tutukuyin ng Sto Papa ang mga katungkulan at limitasyon ng mga pamahalaan at magbibigay ng hamon sa mga pangkasalukuyang idelohiya o paraan ng pag-iisip sa pag-asang magkakaroon ng mga pagbabago sa ating mga sistema.

Populorum Progressio

Tinalakay ni Benito XVI ang mga katuruang panlipunan na nakapaloob sa Encyclical na isinulat ni Papa Pablo VI noong 1967 na Populorum Progressio na nagbibigay liwanag sa sitwasyon ng lipunan natin ngayon at ang kaunlaran ng mga tao. Itinuro niya na ang pangunahing paraan sa pag-unlad ng mga tao ay ang pamumuhay sa loob ni Kristo at dapat nating linangin ang ating sarili sa paggamit ng ating mga puso at ng ating kaalaman, ang  pag-galaw sa loob ng pagmamahal at ng katotohanan, pag-ibig  sa loob ng pagmamahal o sa "Caritas in Veritate" .

Mayroon tayong facebook, twitter email, mga smart devices. Nalalaman natin ang mga nangyayari sa kabilang dulo ng ating mundo sa pamamagitan ng makapabagong teknolohiya sa komunikasyon. Mayroong mas matinding pagsasalamuha ng kultura at ideya ng mga bansa ngunit ang bilis ng pagbuo ng koneksyon ay 'di napapantayan ng etikal na paghahalubilo ng konsiyensya at ng isipan. Ang ugnayan na nabubuo ay nagkukulang ng perspektibo na mahalag para sa kabuuang kaunlaran ng bawat tao, katawan at espiritu.

Ano ang misyon ng Simbahan sa ating lipunan?

Walang teknikal na solusyon ang Iglesiya sa ating mga kasalukuyang suliranin at 'di humahadlang ang Iglesiya sa politika ng  Estado ngunit ang Iglesiya  ay may misyon upang ipangalat ang katotohanan upang masigurado na ang lipunan ay nakasentro para sa tao, sa dignidad ng tao at sa bokasyon ng tao

Ano ang kahulugan ng "Caritas in Veritate"  o Pag-ibig sa loob ng Katotohanan?

Tignan natin ang salitang 'Pag-ibig'.

Ang pag-ibig ay 'di lang pakiramdam, ito ay grasya: ito ay bigay ng Diyos mula sa kanyang kabutihan at tinatawag tayo upang ibigay ang pag-ibig na ito; Ang pag-ibig na ito ay nabunyag at kapiling natin kay Hesus at ibinigay sa atin sa pamamagitan ng Espiritu Santo. Tayo din ay tinatawag upang bumuo ng ugnayan ng pagmamahal

()Ang pagmamahal ay nagbibigay ng laman sa ating personal na relasyon sa Diyos at sa ating kapwa.
()Ito ang pinaka-puso ng Doktrinang Panglipunan ng Iglesiya. Ang bawat katungkulan na pinapaalala ng Iglesiya ay umaagos mula sa pag-ibig na pinaka-buod ng Kautusan ng Diyos (cf. Mt 22:36- 40)

Ano ang kahulugan ng salitang "Veritate"?

Ito ay ang Katotohanan. Ang Katotohanan ay 'di gawa-gawa lamang. Ito ay natatagpuan at natatanggap. Halimbawa, alam natin na ang isang lapis ay hindi isang prutas. Maaring pilitin natin ang sarili natin at sabihin na ang lapis ay isang prutas ngunit 'di nagbabago ang katotohanan na ang lapis ay 'di isang prutas.

May tinatawag tayo sa nangyayari ngayon na "relativization of truth" na isang maling paniniwala na ang 'katotohanan' para sa isang tao ay maaring hindi katotohanan para sa ibang tao. Ang maling paniniwala na ito ay nagsasabi na ang 'katotohanan' ay nababatay lamang sa kung ano ang sa personal nating pananaw na totoo. Mayroon tayong madalas na sinasabi na "Kanya Kanyang paniniwala lang yan'" Alam natin na ito ay mali dahil mayroon talagang katotohanan. Ang Katotohanan mismo ay nagkatawang-tao at si Hesu-Cristo, ang Diyos na naging tao ang Katotohanan. Alam din natin na ang Katotohanan ay 'di nagbabago.

Paano natin nalalaman ang katotohanan tungkol sa ating mga sarili? Maari ba nating makilala ang katotohanan? Ang Diyos ay mabuti at makapangyarihan. Binigyan niya tayo ng kakayahan upang mahanap at malaman ang katotohanan. Nangangahulugan na ang ating pagnanasa upang hanapin ang katotohanan ay bokasyon ng bawat tao na itinanim ng Diyos sa loob ng ating mga sarili.

Saan natin makikita ang katotohanan? Nahahanap natin ang katotohanan sa batas ng kalikasan o "Natural Law" na siyang likas na sistema ng mga bagay. Unti-unti nating nakikita ang plano ng Diyos para sa sangnilikha at para sa mga tao. Higit sa lahat, nakikita natin ang katotohanan sa pagtingin natin kay Kristo kung saan ang paghahanapa natin sa pag-ibig at katotohanan ay pinadadalisay at pinapalaya ni Hesu-Cristo sa kabila ng ating mga pagkukulang tulad ng paghina ng ating mga isip at mahinang kalooban na mga bunga ng orihinal na kasalanan. Ibinunyag ni Hesus ng buo kung ano ang pag-ibig at ang tunay na plano na inihanda ng Diyos para sa atin.

Ngayong alam na natin kung saan mahahanap ang katotohanan ng tungkol sa tao, sa pamamagitan ng katotohanang ito, nagkakaroon tayo ng pagakataon na tunay na mahalin upang makatulong sa kanilang paglago at upang makamtan natin ang hustisya at ang kapayapaan. Ang ganitong uri ng pag-ibig ay lumalagpas pa kahit sa mga pagkukulang sa kultura o nakaraan ng tao. Halimbawa, alam ng kahit anong bansa  na ang pumatay, ang magnakaw at mangalunya ay mali kahit anupman ang kultura at relihiyon ng mga tao. Kung mahal natin ang tao ng tunay, kailngan natin silang mahalin sa daan ng katotohanan. Hindi ito madali kung minsan at kung minsan ito pa nga ay sanhi ng pagtatakwil at pag-iwan sa tao lalo na kung sinasabihan natin ang iba na mali ang kanilang ginagawa. Ang pinaka ehemplo ng prinsipyo ng Caritas in Veritate ay si Hesu-Cristo na siyang nagpakita ng ganitong paraan sa Kaniyang buhay sa lupa at, higit sa lahat, sa Kaniyang pagkamatay ay muling-pagkabuhay.Kahit ang Diyos na nagkatawang-tao ay nakaranas na maitakwil at maiwanan. Kay Kristo, nakikita nating ang mukha ng pagmamahal sa loob ng katotohanan, na siya ding tawag sa atin na mahalin ang aitng mga kapatid sa katotohanan ng Kaniyang plano. Siya mismo ang Katotohanan. Minsan, nagmamahal tayo batay sa ating mga maling akala at batay sa ating mga nararamdaman na 'di katiyakan ng tunay na pag-ibig. Ang pagkakamali na ito ay minsang nagdadala sa atin na gawin ang kabaligtaran ng pag-ibig.

Maligayang ika-7 Anibersaryo sa inyo mga groupmates!

Ang Ebanghelyo ng Panginoon ay tunay nga na 'di lang nakakapagbigay ng kaalaman sa ating lahat, ang Ebanghelyo ay may kapangyarihan na makapagbago sa ating lahat! Ang pagbabago na ito ay nagpapalago at nagpapaunlad sa ating buong katauhan, sa esperitwal, sa pisikal,  at sa ating relasyon sa Diyos at sa lipunan.

Sa aking karanasan, ang aking paglago sa grupo ay sa pagbabahagi ng aking mga pagninilay sa mga Pagbasa at pagbukas ko sa aking sarili sa mga naibabahagi ng iba  tunay nga na tinutulungan ako ng Panginoon na paglalimin ang aking kaalaman sa Pananampalataya at pagpapalakas ng aking esperitwal na buhay sa pamamagitan ng lalo kong pagkilala sa Kanya. Nagpapasalamat ako at naging kasama ko kayo sa grupo na nagbibigay sigla sa akin upang ipagpatuloy ang pagtagpo sa Panginoon sa ating Pananampalataya. Dahil sa inyo, alam ko na lagi akong may kasama, na laging may makikinig at magbabasa ng aking ibabahagi, na laging may bukas-palad sa ating grupo na magbabahagi ng kanilang kaalaman, pagmamahal at pagninilay. Tunay na nagkakaroon tayo sa grupo na ito na masaksihan na tayo ay gawa para sa handog: ang lahat ng kabutihan ay natanggap natin mula sa Panginoon at tayo'y tinatawag upang ihandog sa iba ang ating sarili at ang ating mga natanggap mula sa Panginoon. 
Dahil sa grupo natuon ang aking pagninilay sa pulyeto, mga pagpabasa, at sa ngayon ay sa mga dokumento ng Iglesiya. Ang paglago ko din sa grupo ang nag-udyok sa akin na makipag-ugnayan sa iba pang mga pangkat.

Malapit na ang Anniversary ng ating Katoliko Group sa Oct 26. Nauna kong naisip na ipagdiwang ang ating anibersaryo ng isang buwan mula Oct 11 ngunit naging abala ako sa pag-buo ng presentasyon sa Encyclical ni Sto Papa Benito XVI na aking ibabahagi sa inyo sa loob ng 30 na ito.

Ano ba ang kasal?Ang kasal ay pag-iisang dibdib ng mag-asawa. Walang makakaisip ng kasal kung hindi dahil sa kakayanan ng lalaki at babae na magkaroon ng anak sa loob ng relasyong sekswal. Ang katotohanan na ito ay ang sentro ng konsepto ng kasal ng lahat ng komunidad sa buong mundo. Ang susi sa pag-unawa sa kasal ay sa pagsasama ng babae at lalaki, isang relasyon na pandalawang tao lamang (kahit sa polygamy) at ito ay mayroong relasyong sekswal na para lamang sa mag-asawa kung saan nagiging ganap ang kanilang pagiging mag-asawa. Ang magkakaparehong pananaw at pagkaunawa sa kasal ng mga komunidad sa buong mundo ay may layunin at naa-angkop sa relasyong bukas sa pagkakaroon ng sariling anak. Ito ang pinaka modelo ng kasal. Ngunit ang kasal ay 'di lang tinitignan bilang paraan upang magkaroon ng anak dahil kahit ang mag-asawa ay walang kakayanan na magka-anak, kinikilala pa din ng simbahan at ng estado na sila ay kasal sa kondisyong ang kasal nila ay naging ganap dahil sa pagtatalik o relasyong sekswal na ordinaryong naglalayon sa pagkakaroon ng anak. Kung ibabase lang natin ang kasal sa nararamdaman ng tao, tandaan natin na maari ding makaranas ng mala-romantikong damdamin ang mahigit na dalawang tao.
